Understanding patterns of thermostat overrides after demand response events

Demand Response (DR) strategies represent an innovative option to optimise energy management. In particular, smart thermostats have captured the attention of scientific community for their effectiveness in achieving energy-saving and peak-shaving by lowering HVAC consumption during critical hours year. One way this aim, is leave control thermostat a third party duration DR event so-called Direct Load Control (DLC) configuration. Most research focuses on overrides events; work, we use real world data from Donate Your Data dataset analyse interaction users with around event. work that interact before (anticipative behaviour) or (reactive behaviour), leading lower efficiency load control. Through clustering techniques, different categories are identified, some significant cases simulated building simulation tool quantify missed power reduction impact energy. The study highlights behaviour can reduce even nullify efficacy DLC strategy. light findings prevent issue, suggest need tailored events archetypes as identified through clustering.
